Monon fatality increases awareness of crossway dangers

A collision that claimed the life of a Bicycle Garage Indy employee yesterday at the 86th street Monon Trail crossing reminds us of the need to have better safeguards and protections available for bicyclists and motorists where the Monon intersects with heavily traveled streets in Indianapolis.
As a former board member of Bicycle Indiana, we discussed the need and the prospect of lobbying for the installation of gates, signs and other warnings that would assist bicyclists and motorists in negotiating these intersections safely.
This is a tragic reminder of the need to revisit safety changes at not only the 86th street Monon crossing, but all Monon crossing locations where too often bicycles and automobiles impact one another and tragedies result.
Please contact the City of Indianapolis to let them know of your desire for changes at these dangerous Monon crossings for cyclists and motorists. Unless we all try to bring about change, these unnecessary collisions between bicyclists and motorists will continue to occur.
