Vision Zero Initiative Aims to Eliminate Traffic Fatalities

The Indianapolis City-County Council recently passed the “Vision Zero” proposal, an initiative that aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries in the city of Indianapolis by 2035.

What is Vision Zero and How Does it Impact Indianapolis?

Vision Zero marks a significant step in the community’s evolving mobility strategy and mirrors similar actions taken by major cities around the world, including Columbus, Denver, and Hoboken. Many of the cities have reported steady declines in traffic fatalities and injuries over the last few years after implementing Vision Zero.

This community safety initiative will bring together representatives from various government agencies, local officials and community partners to create an action plan focused on eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries.

“By working together with community members and other stakeholders, we can ensure a safer transportation network for all users of our city’s infrastructure,” Brandon Herget, the director of the city of Indianapolis’ Department of Public Works, said in the release. “Passage of (the) Vision Zero ordinance reflects our commitment to create safer streets for all users.”

How Indianapolis Plans to Eliminate Traffic Fatalities

Each year, more than 40,000 people — an average of 100 people per day — are killed, and millions more are injured in traffic crashes all over the country. While often referred to as “accidents,” the reality is these tragedies can be prevented by taking a proactive, preventative approach that prioritizes traffic safety as a public health issue.

Indianapolis aims to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from crashes but not necessarily eliminate all crashes. This approach acknowledges that even the best drivers make mistakes, so roads and systems must be designed to keep everyone safe.
