Who’s Liable for a School Shooting?

Tragic incidents like the one that took place in Parkland, Florida can
happen anywhere with little to no warning signs. Those events changed
the lives of everyone affected forever. With school shootings making headlines
across the country, we’ve been asked who’s liable for such a tragic event.
In many cases, it’s the school system who has the duty to supervise
and protect their students. Negligence can many times lead to tragedy.
In the unfortunate event of a loved one being injured or killed at school,
you might be entitled to damages from the school or school corporation.
But this is not just limited to school shootings. Some other examples of
possible claims:
- Injuries sustained in a school bus crash.
- An injury on a school playground, in a gymnasium, or in a pool.
- An assault (including a school shooting) by a teacher or other school employee,
another student, or someone on school grounds who is not a school district employee. - Food poisoning from a meal served at the cafeteria
At 10 a.m. March 14th students are planning to walk outside for 17 minutes
in honor of the 17 victims of the February mass shooting and to call for
legislation that responds to gun violence.
