Indiana Ranks 4th in the Nation for Having the Highest Number of Railroad Grade Crossing Incidents
In an effort to remind motorists to drive with extra caution when near railroad tracks, a safety blitz was conducted in Lake County at a high traffic railroad crossing by the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, along with two other traffic enforcement agencies.
Indiana State Police are fully committed to ensuring motorists exercise appropriate precautions when near railroad crossings.
The blitz resulted in 15 citations, 25 warnings, 35 commercial motor vehicle violations, 1 vehicle impounding, and 1 felony arrest- just to name a few.
The violations found during the enforcement action included:
- Disregarding the signal of a train approaching
- Driving left of center within 100 feet of a grade crossing (veered over the center line)
- Stopping too close to a railroad crossing
- Stopping on the railroad crossing itself
- Disregarding a traffic control device
Railroad crossings are extremely dangerous, and can easily result in a tragic collision. Every rail crossing should have ample signage warning motorists of any approaching crossing, and clearly visible so as to provide adequate time for motorists to see an approaching train. However, at Tabor Law Firm we know that unfortunately is not always the case, and as a result fatal collisions can, and do occur. If you or a loved one are involved in a collision at a rail crossing, contact Tabor Law Firm for a free consultation.
