Why Buzzed Driving is Just as Dangerous as Drunk Driving

We all know drunk driving is dangerous and against the law, but many people believe driving while buzzed is nowhere near as risky. The truth is that, even if you are not legally drunk, your faculties might still be impaired. In Indiana, it is possible to face DUI charges even if you test under .08, so everyone should keep that in mind whenever they choose to go out for drinks.

Buzzed Driving Can Still Cause Accidents

According to a study conducted by a sociologist at the University of California San Diego, drivers with a BAC of .01 are 46% more likely to get involved in traffic collisions than drivers who did not drink any alcohol. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that, in 2017, alcohol impairment caused nearly 29% of all traffic-related deaths in the country. To put it into perspective, that equates to 10,874 people.

Every person processes alcohol a little differently, based on weight, size, gender, and the type of alcohol consumed. However, generally, it takes about 3 drinks per hour for a woman to reach a BAC of .08 and about 4 drinks per hour for a man to reach a BAC of .08. For both genders, one drink per hour can put them over a BAC of .01, which means one’s faculties would be relatively impaired despite being well under the legal limit. Ultimately, the best way to avoid an alcohol-related accident is to simply not drink if you plan on driving.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), changing the legal limit for BAC to .05 could save as many as 1,000 lives every year. Although it is unclear if any of these studies or statistics will result in a greater push for lowering the legal limit, it is clear that drivers should exercise more caution. If you plan on drinking, ride with a designated driver or call for a ridesharing service or taxi. There is no reason to drive while buzzed or drunk, given all the options available to safely travel to and from any destination.
