Indianapolis Fire Department Truck Totaled in Head-on Crash

The Indianapolis Fire Dept. tweeted that four firefighters were involved in a collision with a car late on Sunday, March 10th. The fire engine had the siren and lights on responding to a medical call before a silver car crossed the center line and struck the fire engine head-on near 38th and Butler in Indianapolis. Four firefighters and the driver of the car were taken to IU Methodist Hospital to be evaluated and treated for minor scrapes and bruises. The driver of the car was later identified as David Bender and was taken into custody as police investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash. Bender was later arrested on a preliminary charge of operating while intoxicated, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The fire truck is likely a total loss, IFD says. A spokesperson for the department said this should not impact fire department coverage in the area.
