They did what? Common causes of bicycle accidents

There’s a saying about bicycle riding: I don’t ride a bike to add days to my life. I ride a bike to add life to my days. The saying captures the essence of riding, that it can be exhilarating, but it can also be dangerous.

According to the CDC, there were over 1,000 bicyclist deaths and nearly 467,000 bicycle-related injuries in 2015. When a crash occurs between motor vehicle and a bike, it is the bicyclist who is most likely to be injured.

Accidents will happen

New bicycle riders are often given this sage piece of advice: watch out for cars. Many times, both car or truck drivers won’t see you, won’t care if you’re there or are simply driving distracted. Watching out for them will get you back home safely. Here are the most common accidents that could happen to you:

  • A vehicle turning left: The most common bicycle accident is when a car turns in front of you at an intersection. Maybe the driver doesn’t see you or misjudges your speed, but still turns. If you see them turning, turn with them to protect yourself.
  • Hit from behind: The fender bender is the most common car accident; which is when the vehicle behind fails to stop. With cycling, when the driver behind you fails to stop, the damage is way worse than a bent fender.
  • Right turn: The car passes you on the left and then turns right—right into your path.
  • Open the door: You’re cycling past a row of cars parked at the curb and someone suddenly opens the door. It might be funny in the movies, but extremely deadly in real life.
  • Traveling too close: You’re riding on the shoulder, unfortunately so are the motor vehicle’s tires.

When you’re injured in a bicycle accident, life can take a deadly turn. Being aware of bicycle crash causes—and your surroundings—can keep your rides exhilarating and safe. If the accident happens to you, know that the experienced personal injury attorneys at Tabor Law Firm are ready to help.
