Fight against Distracted Driving

International officials recently met at the United Nations headquarters to launch a global effort to address the problems of distracted driving. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood and other ambassadors were present as advocates for the global initiative.

“We believe our nations can do more to stop distracted driving if we work together,” said LaHood.

Research shows that distracted drivers are about four times more likely to be involved in an accident than non-distracted drivers are. A person who is texting while driving is twenty times more likely than a non-distracted driver to be involved in an accident.

Nationwide, around 570,000 motor accidents are blamed on distractions from cell phones and texting is consider the biggest problem. While 25 states have passed bills that ban texting while driving, Indiana only restricts those under 18.

At Tabor Law, we know that it is unlikely that every driver will stop texting or using cell phones while driving, but applaud the U.N. and their global effort to address the problem of distracted driving. If you have been seriously injured in an accident involving a distracted driver, contact Tabor Law.
