Electrocution
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is required to protect those working in the construction industry. OSHA assures a certain level of safety for construction workers who may be exposed to hazardous conditions. State and Federal regulations are required, but they offer only a minimal amount of comfort to workers and their families. Electrocution can cause very serious injuries and possible death in certain situations.
Electrocution accidents on construction sites are commonly caused by:
* Faulty wiring
* Equipment comes in contact with power lines
* Unaware of electrical lines
* Failure to contact utility company
* Improper use of electricity
Many times, construction workers are victims of irresponsible employers and are exposed to unnecessary risk. Case Study
Self v. PSI Energy, Inc.
On August 12, 1997, twenty-six year old (26) Thomas Self was applying new vinyl siding to a residence located in Bedford, Indiana. As he was working, he inadvertently came into contact with a frayed and exposed electrical service power line owned and maintained by PSI Energy, Inc. The electrical shock from this poorly maintained power line caused Thomas Self to fall 12 feet to a concrete slab where he died. Thomas left behind his wife, Kami, age 25, and their three children, ages 6, 5 and 3. Tabor Law Firm represented Kami Self and her three children in a wrongful death action against the Defendant. Our investigation revealed PSI was negligent for using an improper insulating material and for allowing the insulation to deteriorate to the point where bare wire was exposed. Tabor Law Firm ultimately helped The Self family reach a successful settlement with the Defendant.
